HTML 5 (Video Tag )

HTML 5 is the next version of HTML, the markup language used on the web.
So says this BBC Blog item. A simple objective of HTML 5 Video is to play video and audio files via a web browser without plugins. It seems to work on this BBC site ok

So no plugins, fine but two non standard file types:-

Either

.OGG or
.OGV

A free tool to do the work and more is called Super Many video formats are accommodated:-
Input Video format: avi, fli, flc, flv, mpg, mov, m4v, mp4, qt, swf, ts, viv, vob, wmv and many more.

Compatability, what's that?

Two file types are available for HTML 5 video, both .MP4 and .OGG. Both are included on my pages. This is to satisfy different browsers, I understand that the code will work on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox browsers. It should also work in MobileSafari on iPhone OS.

Safari and Chrome play the .MP4 video,
Firefox plays the .OGG.
Chrome supports both formats, and plays the one listed first.
The video and audio quality of the .MP4 format are noticeably superior.

My .MP4 files are 360 wide and the .OGG files 720 wide.

Even so the .OGG files are smaller.
Only Firefox honours the convention that if autobuffer is not coded

the video file will not load. This means that the poster attribute will only work in firefox.
I have not used the Poster attribute but have linked to the video page instead and used Autoplay on that page.

The procedure

Convert VOB => AVI using Super converter
Edit the AVI, as required
Then convert to two different file types:-

AVI to OGG 720 x 480
AVI to MP4 360 x 240

If the files are to be uploaded to the web it is important that both file types are included. MP4 files are required by Apple systems but are twice as big as the OGG files.
If saved onto a CD to be played on a computer, only the OGG is required and the Chrome Browser.
Next write a HTML video page using the following code:-

Add any contextual text as required.
Now write a menu page to give the user a method of choosing the videos. Include snapshot from the video on this page. The native format from the VLC player is PNG which is OK.
Not all browsers support the poster attribute so the snapshot on this page will serve the same purpose.
If the end user will view the files on a computer then burn the whole lot to a Data CD

Original AVI
.OGG and MP4
HTML Video and Menu pages
Any MP3 audio files

Or burn the OGG files onto a DVD using Sothink software

Wow I have just found a new web site for on line presentations

Think not of one powerpoint slide after another but of one BIG sheet that you move around and zoom into. The files you make and save are public and can be downloaded and shown off line.

Pictures, Sound and Video files can all be viewed as well as text, spreadsheets and pdf files.

There is an auto play option but it is better not to use it because not all the features are used in this mode.

I host my Family tree data of over 1,000 relations with a time spread starting at the present day and back to the sixteenth century on the Ancestry web site.

Ancestry is a great system and worth the money I pay but it has it's limitations.

Here are my thoughts about my dilemma; how to make my data public and make it easy for folk to know about my updates.


Ancestry is where I put my info and pictures
	They say the info will be kept forever
	But it is semi private, not every one can see it
My web pages are public and accessible
	But will only be there for as long as I pay my ISP
	But there is no notification of any updates
My Blog can notify of updates via RSS
	But not every one understands how to use RSS

Google Reader is an easy way to manage RSS feeds

So here is my plan for the future:-

Continue with Ancestry holding the master copy of my data.
Continue to add to my own web site as new info is found and ratified
To write a new blog page here each time my web site is updated
Hope this makes sense to others

RSS Feeds for the Beginner

If you have not heard of RSS before do not worry it's just a way to be told of updates rather than looking out for new stuff.

Take a look at the Tutorial on RSS on You Tube it will show you how to use the system using my favourite reader Google Reader

Then add this link to your new reader :-

You can do this by clicking on the RSS symbol on my web site and it should link to Google reader.

Note :-

Remember your user name for the reader
Remember the password
Remember to look at your reader one or twice a week

If you subscribe to 50 RSS feeds you only need to look at the reader once, all the updates will be there, like magic !

My Family Tree

In Jan 2009 when the 1911 UK Census was made public I joined the family tree site named
Ancestry Since then I have been gradually updating my knowledge about my family.

Ancestry is semi private, that is you have to pay money or be invited to view. The viewing invite does not seem to work outside the UK.

So in addition to the data on the Ancestry site I have also made my own site.

After building the new shed I can now get at the ladder in the garage.

So Wednesday I sorted out the rain gauge, just full of spiders web. That sorted I had to check that all works with the new data looger. After a weeks work it now does.

After perhaps my last trip to the Guildford house it is time to see if the car will fit in the garage. This of course means sorting the junk, so its back to Ebay, the dump and the charity shop.

Eight weeks on and still not finished!

All tiles up.

Most grouted.

All pipes in, new foul pipes and WC.

Tiles are up, well two walls. Shower tray is in and the WC removed. Drains in tomorrow, with luck

My legs hurt from climbing the stairs.

The third of September saw the start of the bathroom makeover. Is this too much for me? Only time will tell.

First a composite picture before I started.

The first job is to remove the bath. This was much too heavy for me so it had to be cut into four pieces.

Each piece was just about all I could lift but the job was done.

The shower unit, the tiles, the plaster all had to be removed
The walls are made of plaster board and will not withstand the blast of water from the power shower. I will replace this with new tile backing boards

I have been looking into RSS and find that yahoo have a RSS web based reader,
it's called my yahoo.

Also if you add /atom.xml to the blogspot url you can get "my yahoo" to see it.

I have taken an interest in recording the weather for a few years now.

Having lived in Bracknell and working opposite the Met Office HQ you may think it was their influence but no it is just me and all for fun.

In the past I have recorded max & min temperature and rainfall together with Gas and electricity consumption.

The local lifeboat has a public weather station, I am now able to record their instruments as well as my own.

All the instruments are read manually, no data logger yet.

Sunday morning

I have just recorded Dad's Army on BBC 7 and am now recording The Navy Lark. I save each recording in MP3 format and play them on my new iPod.

Here's a funny, a friend of my daughters calls the iPod a "One Pod" 1Pod.

Put the Stainless Steel tiles x 28 up above the cooker yesterday, mow the lawn and then grout today
